WHAT'S GOING ON (at the beginning of KJRW's 5th year)

KJRW begins its fifth year online by once again turning our focus to the Sound.  Puget Sound, that is.  Clouds.  Logging.  Flannel.  We continue our musical journey following Alternative Rock into the 90's, when it exploded into the mainstream.  Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam are just the tip of the volcanic mountain.

A quick look back at November shows that KJRW's rank among the rock stations on Live365 went up a couple notches.  The average time people spent listening to KJRW in November was higher than in October.  People listened the most in the U.S., Canada, France, Spain, Mexico, New Zealand, Finland, Sweden, Germany and the U.K.  Inside the U.S., listening was tops in Illinois, New York, Georgia, California, Ohio, Indiana, Texas, Virginia, Michigan and Florida.

Your favorite songs the last week of November were:

  1. Rise Above - Black Flag
  2. Corona - Minutemen
  3. Bonzo Goes To Bitburg - Ramones
  4. Lies - Greenhornes
  5. Good Thing - Fine Young Cannibals
  6. Waiting Room - Fugazi
  7. What You Need - INXS
  8. Bela Lugosi's Dead - Bauhaus
  9. Rat Race - Brody Dalle
  10. Supermassive Black Hole - Muse

The good news is that we have raised enough money to renew our contract with Live365 next month!  KJRW will stay online another year, and will have more room to store more songs and more people will be able to listen at a time without having to pay a subscription fee.  More!  More!  More!

Our rank among the rock stations on Live365 is holding steady.  We're just shy of being made a favorite 600 times. KJRW picked up a few more twitter followers this past week.  If you would like more frequent updates about the station, follow us on twitter or like the facebook page.

Your current favorite songs on KJRW are:

WHAT'S GOING ON (a week into November)

There's just a few weeks left of our contract with Live365, and we have raised enough money for a "bronze" renewal.  That is the minimum amount to keep KJRW online.  If we raise just $70 more, we will qualify for a "silver" contract.  What would that mean to you?  More listeners could tune in for free, and we could expand our library to play even more songs.

We did get off to a slow start on our fundraising because our campaign page on Go Fund Me was telling people they could not make donations.  That problem was fixed by making a brand new page:  http://www.gofundme.com/renewKJRW.
We're off to a good start in November.  The average time people spend listening to KJRW is double what it was in October.  Consequently, our rank has clicked up a few notches.  It is still Fall, so we are still rocking College style.  Our College Rock T-shirts will only be available in the KJRW Corner Store for a few more weeks.

Your favorite songs the first week of November were:

  1. Supermassive Black Hole - Muse
  2. The Busdrivers - Josh's Shirt
  3. Good Thing - Fine Young Cannibals
  4. Season of the Witch - Joan Jett and the Blackhearts

And now that New Wave Summer has ended, it's time for KJRW to go to college.  Soon you will hear from R.E.M, The Cure, The Replacements, The Smithereens, They Might Be Giants and much, much more on KJRW...

SPINSTER

DJ Spinster has had the last month off and we thought she would be anxious to return to KJRW on June 1st, but it looks like it is going to take a little convincing.  We told her that listening in May was half it was in April, and that clearly everyone wants her back.

As much as KJRW's rank climbed in April, it dropped in May.  There were still over 14 hundred visits to the station page on Live365.com and over a thousand streams launched.

Please continue to enjoy the music mix you cannot hear anywhere else but on KJRW, and tune in to see when the Spinster returns...

Tell the Spinster to get her ass back in the DJ seat!

MEN ARE APRIL WHEN THEY WOO

Now that we are midway through May, let's talk about April.  Ahhh April, when there was only one day without a deejay.  More people listened on this April Fool's Day than on any other we have endured on KJRW.  And it was all uphill from there!

Graph

The play button was pressed over 12 hundred times.  The KJRW page at Live365.com was visited over 2 thousand times.  People spent the most time listening since the station was created!  Consequently, KJRW achieved the highest rank among all the stations on Live365 ever!

NO DEEJAY MAY

Ever wonder what KJRW would sound like without a DJ?
No one to tell you what you are about to hear.  No one to play those funny id's between tunes.  No one to make sure an artist does not perform more than once an hour.  No one to keep the same song from repeating. We got a little taste of that on April 1st.  But that was only one day.  What would it be like for an entire month?  Listen to KJRW during May to find out what happens...

WE DO NEED SOME MUSIC EDUCATION

"Building on existing research (Kirschner and Tomasello in 20102) which found that making music significantly improves pro-social behaviour in young children) the current study investigated not only the potential effects of music making (singing or playing an instrument) on pro-sociability but also its effects on problem-solving and whether there was a difference between boys and girls.
The study, carried out by undergraduate student, Rie Davies, and academics Dr Maddie Ohl and Dr Anne Manyande from the School of Psychology at the University of West London, explored the pro-sociability, co-operation and problem-solving abilities of 24 girls and 24 boys aged four.
The children in the study were randomly assigned to either a 'Music' Group (Group 1) or a 'No Music' Group (Group 2). Children in Group 1 (Music) sang and played the percussion bullfrog and children in Group 2 (No Music) listened to a story. These sequences were then followed by two games a 'Co-operation' game and a 'Helping' game. The children's problem solving ability was tested by observing their reactions during the 'Helping' game.
Music improved helpfulness for both girls and boys with children in the 'Music' group over thirty times more likely to help than those in the 'No Music' group. Girls were over twenty times more likely to help than boys. Making music was also shown to improve co-operation among all the children in the 'Music Group' who were six times more likely to co-operate than those in the 'No Music' Group. Once again girls were even more likely to co-operate after music making than boys. Boys in the 'Music' Group were also four times more likely to problem solve.
Rie Davies said: "This study provides support for prior research by Kirschner and Tomasello (2010)1 and also highlights the need for schools and parents to understand the important role music making has in children's lives in terms of social bonding and helping behaviours. Music making in class, particularly singing, may encourage pupils with learning differences and emotional difficulties to feel less alienated in the school environment."*

The moral of the story is:  KEEP MUSIC IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS!  Don't you agree?

MARCH INTO THE SEA

We made it through another April Fool's Day.  There were actually some cool 60's songs.  And more people tuned in than on any previous April 1st.  We may try to go a whole month without a DJ and see how that sounds.

Now as for March, our rank slipped a little bit due to people listening for free a little less.  VIP's were pressing the play button a bunch more, though.  Over 11 hundred streams were launched during last month.  There were a couple hundred more visits to the station page on Live365.com than in February.  KJRW was made a preset station the most times in March than in the past year.

People spent the largest amount of time listening in the U.S., Canada, China, Spain, Australia, U.K., Thailand, Colombia, Sweden and France.  Inside the U.S., Washington, Illinois, California, Alabama, Texas, Ohio, Arkansas, Colorado, North Carolina and Georgia were tops in listening.

WALK THIS WAY

"Most people synchronize their steps to the beat of their tunes when they listen to music on a walk. In the current study, researchers found that even when excerpts of music had identical tempo and beat, other acoustic features influenced walkers' stride and speed.
Participants in the study heard samples of 52 different types of music that all had the same tempo and a 4-beat meter during a walk, but their stride lengthened in response to some tunes and was shorter in response to others. These differences in stride caused an overall difference in the pace of their walk.
After the experiment, participants rated the music they had heard with bipolar adjectives like bad or good, aggressive or tender, familiar or unfamiliar. Music which increased walking speed the most was most frequently rated bad, aggressive, loud or fast, whereas emotions, familiarity or taste had little correlation to the music's effect on pace. Pop-techno sounds were more prominent in the excerpts that increased pace, compared to jazz-reggae on tunes that decreased walking pace. Leman adds "Music tones up or tones down your walking stride depending on musical style, even when the tempo is the same. This offers perspectives for sports and physical rehabilitation."*

I DON'T HATE MYSELF FOR LOVING YOU

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts played a sold-out show at Snoqualmie Casino in Washington Sunday night.  It was their second show in the ballroom in a little less than a year.  Breaking with tradition, the set began not with Bad Reputation, but TMI from the new album, Unvarnished.  Almost half of the songs during the concert came from the new album (Soulmates To Strangers, Make It Back, Fragile, Hard To Grow Up, Any Weather and Reality Mentality).  The Runaways classic, Cherry Bomb remained in its usual second slot.

It was at about this time that I reached up to get a high five from bassist Acey Slade.  He instead shook my hand and left his guitar pick in my palm.  They then launched into Gary Glitter's Do You Wanna Touch Me and Bad Reputation.  The Blackhearts really hit their stride midway through the set with the first song Joan Jett ever wrote, You Drive Me Wild.  This was the highlight of the show for me because she came over and played part of it right above me.

The show ended with the trifecta of tunes that most people go to hear:  I Love Rock 'N' Roll, Crimson and Clover and I Hate Myself For Loving You.  The encore included The Sweet's AC/DC and Sly and the Family Stone's Everyday People.

SAME OLD SONG AND DANCE

"We are constantly bombarded with a seemingly limitless amount of new music in our daily lives. But why do we keep coming back to that one song or album we couldn't get enough of in college?
New research from Washington University's Olin Business School shows that although consumers say they prefer to listen to unfamiliar music, their choices actually belie that preference.
The study, "The Same Old Song: The Power of Familiarity in Music Choice," could have implications for marketers and the playlists, events, venues and products which they choose to advertise.
"In three studies, we examined the power of familiarity on music choice and showed that familiarity is a more important driver of music choice than more obvious, and commonly tested, constructs such as liking and satiation, i.e., being 'sick of' certain music," says Joseph K. Goodman, PhD, associate professor of marketing at Olin and co-author of the study, along with Morgan Ward of Southern Methodist University and Julie Irwin of University of Texas at Austin.
"Our results suggest that the emphasis on novelty in the music domain, by consumers and people often protesting the current state of the music business, is probably misplaced," Goodman says. "In the marketplace, and in our pilot study, consumers say that they want more novelty when in fact their choices suggest they do not."
The study shows that consumers pick music they are familiar with even when they believe they would prefer less familiar music.
Goodman suggests that based on the findings marketers should continue to promote what is familiar to consumers, even though it might not be the most liked. In addition, managers and artists should not underestimate the power of familiarity when promoting their music.
He says that though the studies show the importance of familiarity in music, it also shows that there is a place for new music as well. Consumers have a need for both novel and familiar music, and they especially prefer familiar music when they are busy working or doing cognitively demanding tasks.
Goodman says that the success of services like Pandora and Spotify will continue because they not only play personalized familiar favorites, but they also introduce people to new music with familiar musical elements."*

So, what do you think?  Do you want to hear your old favorites or new stuff?  Do you say you want to hear new stuff, when you really prefer hearing your old favorites?

DON'T WORRY, BE HAPPY

Our friends at the Stress Blog write about listening to upbeat music to stay happy.  We at KJRW have to wonder what listening to the tunes we play does to people's moods.

UNDERCOVER ANGEL

Songs by Nancy Sinatra, the Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Gloria Gaynor, Elvis Presley, the Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd playing on KJRW??  No, it's not April Fool's Day.  It's Dive Under the Covers month.  You will hear Gang Green take on 'Til Tuesday, Generation X do John Lennon and more all during January on KJRW.

Sometimes covers become more popular than the original versions of songs such as Santana's version of the Fleetwood Mac song "Black Magic Woman" or Jimi Hendrix's cover of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower".  Are the tunes KJRW is playing more popular than the originals?  Probably not.  But we think they sound cool.

DECEMBER YOU'VE ALWAYS BEEN A PROBLEM CHILD

During December, listening was highest in the U.S., Canada, Brazil, France, Mexico, U.K., Denmark, Spain, Philippines and Hungary.  Inside the U.S., people listened the most in Alabama, Washington, California, Texas, Colorado, Nevada, Virginia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Arkansas.

There were more visits to the KJRW page on Live365.com in December than in the previous month.  The average amount of time people spent listening was up a tiny bit also.  However, the number of streams launched was the lowest of the entire fall season.

Please make sure your version of flash player is up to date so you can listen to KJRW.  We had one listener tell us that she could see all the great songs that were playing on the station, and was frustrated to not be able to hear them because her software was not upgraded on her computer.

We started December playing back the Top 113 of 2013.  It was the first month of our fourth year online.  Onward and upward, we say!

January is Dive Under the Covers month on KJRW.  Please push 'play'.
