WHAT's GOING ON (at the end of 2016)

A year ago, we found out KJRW was losing its home on Live365.  We made the move to Radionomy in February.  It gave us more space for more songs and slightly better sound quality.  It allowed more people to listen to the station at the same time for free.  And you listened longer than ever!  However, it made it more difficult for you to give us feedback and rate the songs, so there is no Top 116 of 2016 song list to post or play.

We are under the semi-constant threat of deletion from Radionomy.  There are listening hurdles we must jump every so often in order to stay online. We are at 57% of our current goal.

We hope to reach our listening goals to keep providing the most awesome alternative rock in the air from Punk to Grunge and beyond in 2017.  Under the Covers continues all winter long.  And we're working on something special for spring.

As long as you keep listening, KJRW will stay online.

Live365 is no more.  KJRW has moved to Radionomy! More space means more music and less repetition. Hear us now at listen.radionomy.com/kjrw.

As always, you can submit song suggestions to kjrwwestseattle@yahoo.com.

Get Under the Covers with KJRW during the month of February and listen to some "love" songs on the 14th.

WHAT'S GOING ON (In the middle of January)

We're halfway through what may be the last month of KJRW on Live365.  The web site could pull the plug on all personal broadcasting on the 31st.  Their press release* is at the bottom of this post.

In the meantime, KJRW is working on building a new music library on Radionomy.  You can listen to this work in progress here:  http://listen.radionomy.com/kjrw.  There is a FREE App for Radionomy that is available for you to listen on your phone.

This is possibly also the last month of trivia at the Shadowland Pub Quiz.  Please catch what could be KJRW's final appearance at the corner of California and Oregon in West Seattle on Monday, January 25th.

Your favorite songs playing on KJRW right now are:

  1. Date Rape - Sublime
  2. When I Come Around - Honeyblood
  3. Ruby Soho - Rancid
  4. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
  5. Love Song - 311
  6. You Are My Sunshine - Screeching Weasel
  7. Sweet Jane - Cowboy Junkies
  8. Everybody Knows - Concrete Blonde
  9. My Sharona - Veruca Salt
  10. Clampdown - Clash

As you can see, more than half are cover songs on the list.  Get Under the Covers with KJRW on Live365 the rest of this month... and maybe next month on Radionomy!

*For 17 years, Live365 has offered small webcasters the opportunity to stream music and talk content, providing an alternative distribution channel for diverse, quality content on the Internet in a legally responsible way.

Recently, the Copyright Royalty Board, the governing entity for establishing the sound recording royalty rates that are paid to copyright holders, has published the new rates for 2016-20. The previous provisions for small webcasters to opt for a percentage of revenue model were not renewed. The current provisions end at the end of 2015. The absence of this license will make legally streaming copyrighted musical content prohibitively expensive for many small to mid-sized Internet broadcasters. Live365 relies on this license for many of their broadcast partners and, as such, has hard decisions to make regarding their future in the streaming industry.
Future of Music Coalition CEO Casey Rae made the following statement regarding the CRB ruling:
We are concerned, however, that there does not appear to be a distinction in rates for small commercial webcasters. Digital music benefits from diversity, and services with more modest operations often help developing talent and niche genres find audiences while contributing to the overall revenue pool. If there isn’t an option for new entrants to perform music from a broad range of artists, we may end up with a less diverse digital landscape.
Two weeks ago, Live365 faced an additional blow, losing the support of its investors who have helped the company with its mission for over a decade. The company was forced to significantly reduce staff and is now actively looking for partners to help continue the service into 2016. At this time, Live365 is planning to keep their stations active while getting the word out about this investment opportunity. With nearly two decades of Internet streaming experience and thousands of paying customers, this could be an ideal situation for a company looking to diversify into streaming audio.
CEO N. Mark Lam has begun initial discussions with possible business partners as the company looks to new options in the new year. Dean Kattari, Director of Broadcasting for Live365 said “The true value of Live365 lies in it’s diversity of content – it’s a sanctuary where you can hear music and other content that it so unlike the template broadcasting that is heard on most terrestrial radio. These stations are the hard work of real human beings who use Live365 to share their vision with the world. It’s a home for musical discovery because many of these stations play emerging artists that terrestrial stations are reluctant to take a chance on. It would be a great loss for this to all go away.”

WHAT'S GOING ON (in the middle of May)

Our host site, Live365 is currently conducting a survey by sending listeners an email with a link to the poll questions.  They mostly concern how you would like to monetarily support your favorite broadcasters.  The results we have seen show that people do not really like the idea of subscribing to Live365 and giving a fixed extra amount of money as a donation to their favorite station.  If you would like to support KJRW without going through Live365, you may visit our Go Fund Me page, and donate any amount you wish.  We have added rewards such as stickers, magnets and T-shirts for your contribution.

Our rank among the rock stations on Live365 is holding steady.  We're just shy of being made a favorite 600 times. KJRW picked up a few more twitter followers this past week.  If you would like more frequent updates about the station, follow us on twitter or like the facebook page.

WHAT'S GOING ON (a week into November)

There's just a few weeks left of our contract with Live365, and we have raised enough money for a "bronze" renewal.  That is the minimum amount to keep KJRW online.  If we raise just $70 more, we will qualify for a "silver" contract.  What would that mean to you?  More listeners could tune in for free, and we could expand our library to play even more songs.

We did get off to a slow start on our fundraising because our campaign page on Go Fund Me was telling people they could not make donations.  That problem was fixed by making a brand new page:  http://www.gofundme.com/renewKJRW.
We're off to a good start in November.  The average time people spend listening to KJRW is double what it was in October.  Consequently, our rank has clicked up a few notches.  It is still Fall, so we are still rocking College style.  Our College Rock T-shirts will only be available in the KJRW Corner Store for a few more weeks.
