A reason to listen every day in May.

Time spent listening in April fell to 28%.  Our hope was to achieve at least 57% to be on pace to reach 100% in 5 months.  People did spend over 11 hundred hours with KJRW in the U.S., Germany, Canada, France, Spain, Poland, Austria, and Italy.

It's still cold, cloudy, and rainy in Seattle, but New Wave Summer is right around the corner...

THE UNVARNISHED TRUTH

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts just released their first album of new material in seven years.  We have heard most of the songs the last couple years played live, as the band has been trying them out in front of audiences.  There are some subtle changes on the recorded versions, but not enough of a change to say I prefer one over the other.

The first single from Unvarnished is Any Weather.  Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters and Nirvana co-wrote the song and played every instrument on it except for rhythm guitar.  He produced the track in his 606 studio with the mixing board from the Sound City recording studio.  If you are an audiophile or music history buff, you should watch his documentary, Sound City from earlier this year.

Another songwriting collaboration with someone outside of the Blackhearts is Soulmates to Strangers.  Laura Jane Grace of Against Me! worked on that one with Joan Jett.  My favorite collaborators are still Donita Sparks and Kathleen Hanna.

The Blackhearts take on topical issues such as over-sharing on Twitter with TMI, reality shows taking over our television screens on Reality Mentality and rebuilding after Hurricane Sandy with Make It Back.

Joan gets personal with Hard To Grow Up and Fragile.  She has referred to recent years as the "decade of death".  She has lost many close to her, including her parents.  Listening to the lyrics makes me want to give her a big hug.  And I am honored that I was able to do that a few months after her mother passed away.

Bad As We Can Be reminds me of Poison's Talk Dirty To Me, but I still like it.  The song that I think I like the most on the album is Different.  Its theme really resonates with me.

The last track on the album is the only one not written by Jett.  Everybody Needs A Hero is an adventurous tune, employing strings, oboe and English horn.  It sort of ends the album on a sour note.  But everybody does need a hero, and mine is Joan Jett.

GAUGING THE GRAMMYS

In recent years, I have felt like a bit of a grandma watching the Grammys.  Kids today!  You call that music?!  So, I was expecting a show full hip hop artists with their pants around their ankles when I turned on the program.  I was never so happy to see Bruce Springsteen.  I figured the opening act would be some pop tart.  Instead, it was the E Street Band (minus a missed Clarence Clemons).  A rock 'n' roll band.  In fact, there was very little hip hop this year. 

The big winner of the night was Adele.  She has a wonderful voice, and I am happy for her that she still possesses it after vocal chord surgery.  While I'm not a fan of that style of music, I can appreciate her talent.  Same goes for Taylor Swift.  I surprisingly liked her performance with her banjo slung low.

LL Cool J was a decent host.  His introduction included a respectful honoring of Whitney Houston.  Later, Jennifer Hudson delivered a beautiful rendition of "I Will Always Love You" at the end of the In Memoriam segment. 

Veterans like Glen Campbell, Paul McCartney and the Beach Boys were not in as good voice as they used to be, but their presence served as a reminder to the music stars of today what came before them.

A couple acts that left me scratching my head were Nicki Minaj and Deadmau5.  And prior to the awards, I thought Bon Iver was a band, not just one guy.  I guess these were my grandma moments for this year.

Random things I enjoyed: National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences President Neil Portnow speaking about keeping music in schools, Cherie Currie and others praising the MusiCares Foundation, Katy Perry's blue hair and Bonnie Raitt's tribute to Etta James.

The two highlights of the show for me were the Foo Fighters winning the Best Rock Performance award and the finale.  I loved watching Bruce Springsteen, Joe Walsh, Dave Grohl and Paul McCartney jam on guitars in the midst of the Golden Slumbers medley.  During Dave Grohl's acceptence speech he said, "The human element of making music is what's most important.  Singing into a microphone and learning to play an instrument and learning to do your craft, that's the most important thing for people to do."  I couldn't agree more.
